Adhesives Made from Water That Still Stick: A Look at Water-Based Acrylic Adhesives

2026-09-23

Traditionally, adhesives are often associated with a pungent odor.

Water-based acrylic adhesives take a different approach—replacing organic solvents with water, making the bonding process much gentler.

What Are They?

The core component of water-based acrylic adhesives is acrylic ester monomers, which form a polymer emulsion through emulsion polymerization. Water acts as the dispersing medium, evenly suspending the tiny polymer particles. After application, the water evaporates, causing the particles to press against and fuse with one another, ultimately forming a transparent adhesive film. Since organic solvents play virtually no role in this process, odors and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions are naturally reduced.

Where Does the Adhesion Come From?

The molecular chains of acrylic ester polymers contain polar groups that interact with surfaces such as paper, plastic, metal, and wood. There is considerable flexibility in formulation—to achieve strong initial tack, add more soft monomers; for better long-term adhesion, increase the proportion of hard monomers; and for water resistance, incorporate some cross-linking monomers. By adjusting the monomer blend and emulsion design, the adhesive’s flexibility, tack, and temperature resistance can be tailored to different levels.

Advantages in Use

Since water serves as the medium, little additional ventilation is required during application. Application tools can be rinsed directly with water, eliminating the need to stock solvents. The dried adhesive film is colorless and transparent, resists yellowing, and has minimal impact on the substrate’s appearance. These characteristics have led to its gradual adoption in applications such as packaging, labeling, woodworking, and textile lamination.

Points to Note

Water has a higher latent heat of vaporization than solvents, resulting in a relatively slower drying rate; therefore, oven temperature and airflow must be adjusted accordingly. In low-temperature environments, the emulsion may freeze and thaw, so insulation must be maintained during storage and transportation. When applying the adhesive to metal surfaces, rust prevention must also be considered, as water-based systems do not inherently provide corrosion inhibition like solvent-based systems do.

Recent Trends

Bio-based monomers are beginning to be incorporated into formulations, with plant-derived raw materials replacing some petroleum-based components. Cross-linking systems are also being optimized to make the adhesive film more water- and heat-resistant. Processes such as soap-free emulsion polymerization and core-shell structures are being used to enhance stability and adhesion performance.

There’s nothing mysterious about water-based acrylic adhesives—it’s simply a matter of replacing solvents with water. They bond where they’re supposed to and don’t cause environmental issues where they shouldn’t.
